Overturned in Wisconsin

Topel Truck Center in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, has been dedicated to offering the finest heavy-duty service in the area since Shawn and Michelle Topel started the business in 2000. Their son Keegan has towing in his blood and joined the business as towing manager.

On Oct. 5, 2018, Topel's was called by the local sheriff's office to handle a rolled-over semi.

"We were dispatched at approximately 7 a.m. by the Jefferson County Sheriff's office to recover this overturned loaded tractor-trailer on I-94 eastbound," Keegan said. "The unit had veered off in between the interstate and the exit ramp and rolled over."

Keegan responded with their 2007 Kenworth T800/Century 1060 60-ton rotator and operator Terry Rettschlag responded with their 1999 Kenworth T800/2007 Century 9055 50-ton with an SP-850 XP side-puller.

The driver was gone and the paperwork for the load was missing, so the recovery crew broke the seal on the trailer to see what they were up against.

"We realized that it was a partial load and decided to use the two tow trucks to recover the unit without the help of our air cushions," Keegan said. "We started at the back of the trailer and got a recovery strap around the rear corner and picked it a little bit and kept working our way forward until we got the straps around it.

"Two lines went to the 1060 rotator and one to the 9055. My deck winch went to the trailer suspension to help spike over. One cable from the boom on the 9055 went to the upper coupler to help and the side-puller we ran to the steer axle to help bring the tractor over."

They rigged and recovered from the off ramp, which made for a quick and easy recovery with just the ramp being closed for a short period of time.

Once the casualty was up on its wheels and back on the road, it was towed back to Topel's facility with the 9055.
