Up Against the Wall [b]& The Spirit in Wyoming

0-Up Against the Walls-TIW-11 copy e81afBy Jim "Buck" Sorrenti

Dale Sheridan Sr. and his wife, Elaine, established Norberg's Towing Service in Green River, Wyoming, in 1967. Their sons Dale Sheridan Norberg Jr. and Shawn Michael Norberg manage and operate the family business they both grew up in.

On Sept. 1, the Wyoming Highway Patrol called Norberg's for a camper rollover.

"He was moving from Colorado to Portland, Oregon. The owner had been building his home for about a year before this move and was about 95 percent done with it." Sheridan said. "We were dispatched by the WHP with just the information that it was a pickup and camper rolled. On this one we used 'Animal' and another flatbed. It doesn't have a name. I just refer to it as 'the Ford.' "

The Animal is a 1997 International 4900 with a DT466 engine and a nine-speed trans. It has a 28' Chevron deck with two winches, an SP-8000 Side-Puller and a GVW of 33,000-lbs. The Ford is a 1999 Ford F800/Century 21' bed.

"Shawn and I went with the rollbacks being we had no idea what to expect," Sheridan said. "We also brought Austin, who is Shawn's oldest son."

When the Norberg's arrived on the scene, they found the roof and wall of this home were loose. The owner informed them that it was 13' 4" tall and the main part was 24' long. Using both the deck winch and side-puller lines from Animal, they rigged to the topside of the rolled over trailer.

"We put the Animal on top with two lines offset using snatch blocks," Sheridan said, "and put the Ford on the bottom with the bed under it, then lifted with that bed to get it started up. The roof had been moved out of the way before we put the Ford to the top. I had to go back to our yard and get Big Orange to stuff the one wall back onto the trailer."

Big Orange is a 1993 Peterbilt/750 Holmes, built by Moeller Brothers of San Francisco in the 1970s. This 750 Holmes with Moeller Brothers conversion is equipped with a 35,000-lbs. Braden winch over the boom and a 30,000-lbs. planetary to raise and lower the boom.

"In the pictures you will see how these are built," Sheridan said. "They don't have to meet any building requirements. There is also a picture of an empty propane bottle that was wedged up under the semi. We picked up pieces until dark, getting the pickup and trailer to town that night but had to leave the roof and other pieces until daylight the next day to finish. Standing up a trailer that tall with rollbacks was interesting, but we got it done."

The Norbergs were proud and honored to take part in the Spirit Ride in July 2018 when it came to Wyoming. The Spirit Ride, which promotes public awareness of the Move Over laws while honoring fallen first responders killed on the roadside, has become known as America's Traveling Memorial Day for First Responders. By the end of 2018 it will have relayed in 300 cities.

This ceremonial casket has been relayed from carrier to carrier across the country, drawing much attention from local media. For Norberg's relay, the "Spirit" casket was transported on The Animal through some of the most beautiful scenery this country has to offer.
